New Delhi: On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, reaffirming India's dedication to facilitating a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
This phone call took place just before a summit involving US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the situation.
In a post on social media, Modi expressed that he reiterated India's steadfast stance on the urgency of achieving a peaceful settlement.
"I was pleased to converse with President Zelenskyy and gain insights into his views on recent events. I reiterated India's unwavering position on the necessity for a swift and peaceful resolution to the conflict," Modi stated.
"India is committed to contributing in every possible way to this effort, while also enhancing our bilateral relations with Ukraine," he added.
Zelenskyy, in response, mentioned that he thoroughly discussed significant matters with Modi, covering both bilateral cooperation and the broader diplomatic landscape.
"I appreciate the Prime Minister's supportive remarks towards our people," he remarked.
The Ukrainian leader emphasized the importance of restricting Russian energy exports, especially oil.
"It is crucial that India backs our peace initiatives and agrees that all matters concerning Ukraine should involve Ukrainian participation. Alternative approaches will not yield effective results," he asserted.
"We also delved into the sanctions imposed on Russia. I highlighted the need to curtail Russian energy exports, particularly oil, to diminish its capacity to fund the ongoing conflict.
"Every leader with influence over Russia must convey the appropriate messages to Moscow," he concluded.
